The Art Fund on Merseyside are delighted to host this event to support Galleries in Merseyside and nationwide.

Julia Carter Preston  made beautiful ceramics in Liverpool for more than 50 years. Her distinctive sgraffito designs are instantly recognisable with their fluid lines drawn from the plants and animals she loved and translated freehand, typically onto large platters, bowls and tiles.

Susan Beck of Liverpool Hope University has worked with Julia and her husband Michael for the past two years, talking with them and recording  their collection,  which as well as Julia’s work includes  that of her father Edward Carter Preston, renowned Liverpool sculptor and medallist. Over two lifetimes the family has also assembled a fine collection of Asian and Italian ceramics alongside the work of many other Liverpool artists.

In this illustrated lecture Susan will talk about Julia’s life and career, her influences and the impact of growing up in a houseful of art and artists and how they came to shape her mind and eye. The accompanying exhibition in the Capstone foyer will  be an exciting opportunity to see examples of Julia Carter Preston’s work and influences from private collections as well as pieces from the Liverpool Hope University Carter Preston Foundation.

We extend a very warm welcome to non-members of The Art Fund and will be offering a special Membership package on the evening.

Wine and canapés will be served before the lecture.
