Liverpool Guitar Society: Steven Joseph Hickey
Friday 17 February - 19:30
London based guitarist Steven Joseph Hickey is quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting and innovative guitarists of his generation. Having already performed throughout the UK and abroad as both a soloist and ensemble player, his performances have captivated and enthralled audiences.
Born in Liverpool, Steven took up guitar at the early age of five. In 2005 he was awarded a place at the world famous Chethams School of Music and in 2007 a coveted entrance scholarship to study at the RNCM under the tutelage of Craig Ogden and Gordon Crosskey.
Steven has performed extensively throughout the UK as both a soloist and chamber musician. Notable recent performances include Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint at the ‘Future Everything 2011’ festival in Manchester, with the composer present; Vivaldi’s Mandolin and Lute concertos at the first ever ‘Classical Music Night’ in Sheffield; three world premieres at the 2010 Sounds New Festival in Canterbury and solo recitals at Manchester Guitar Circle, Hyde Town Hall and Whitworth Art Gallery.
He was the first guitarist ever to reach the final of the RNCM’s prestigious Gold Medal Award 2010, won first prize in the regional final of the Lions European Music Competition 2009 and reached the final of the Haverhill Sinfonia Competition 2010.
As a lover of contemporary music, Steven has had the privilege of giving many world premieres of solo and ensemble works, including pieces by Duncan Ward, Yunhee Lee, Mark Houghton and Daniel Green, who have all dedicated works to him.
For this concert he will play a selection of works by Brouwer, Gary Ryan, Barrios and J.S. Bach along with Steve Reich's stunning multi-guitar composition Electric Counterpoint.
He will be supported by a set from The Liverpool Guitar Society, a local group dedicated to promoting and championing new talent in classical guitar playing.
