This project is a collaboration between local prison, HMP Liverpool, undergraduate students from Liverpool Hope University and residents of local care homes living with dementia. It was created by Associate Professors Dr Niamh Malone and Dr Gary Anderson and was initially delivered as part of the HMP2Hope arts intervention project in prisons.

The response was so positive from the prisoners participating in the project, that it was extended to other settings too.

The jigsaw project has proven to be particularly beneficial for helping people’s mental health. The act of jigsaw making demands focus and helps people to be ‘in the moment’. It also enhances collaboration between participants, gives a sense of achievement and contributes to improving the built environment with the jigsaws decorating prison cells, care homes and student halls.

The jigsaws used for this project all depict classic paintings from the Dutch Golden Age (Bosch, Bruegel, Steen, Vermeer etc).

Before the jigsaws are made, each image is discussed in the groups and ideas around ‘judgement’ – what it is and can we move beyond it, all find expression through the images depicted.
