Mendelssohn – A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Overture
Mozart – Piano Concerto No.24
Mendelssohn – A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Scherzo, Intermezzo & Nocturne
Haydn – Symphony No.60 “Il Distratto”
Conductor: Ewa Strusinska
Piano: Ana-Marija Markovina
With summer hopefully round the corner what could be more apt than to enjoy Mendelssohn’s incidental music to Shakespeare’s timeless comedy. LMO start with the lively overture, written when Mendelssohn was just 17 and bursting with melody and invention, even for Mendelssohn - be sure to listen out for Bottom’s braying!
The remaining music was written 16 years later and is typical of Mendelssohn’s later, more romantic style. The Orchestra has selected the bustling Scherzo, ominous Intermezzo and serene Nocturne for your listening pleasure.
In between the ensemble is delighted to welcome international soloist Ana-Marija Markovina, who is currently recording all of Mozart’s Piano Concertos, to perform the 24th Concerto in C Minor, a sonorous and beautiful work finishing with a dazzling set of variations.
And to end, Haydn’s witty and unconventional 60th Symphony, also originally written as incidental music and featuring “Il Distratto” which can be loosely translated as “The Nutty Professor”, a fitting ending to this evening of midsummer madness!
