Maja Bugge/HPM

Friday, 17 November 2017 Time: 7.30pm

This concert is a double bill featuring in the first half Norwegian cellist Maja Bugge, and in the second half an Italian duo (HPM) featuring electric violin, electronics and drums.

Maja Bugge is a Norwegian cellist and composer currently based in Lancaster. She creates and performs music inspired by the simultaneously beautiful and brutal landscapes of the north of Norway, where she was born and brought up. Maja’s unique sound – as evidenced on her CD Shelter (Euredice, 2012) – explores stillness and repetition, harmony and dissonance. Her music balances melody and rhythm with external ambience, acoustics and atmosphere. In the first half of the concert she will perform her piece Shelter, for solo cello projected visuals by artist Adam York Gregory.

HPM is a project entirely based on electric violin, octapad, loop machines and effects. The loop machine, played live, enables the creation of melodic string phrases and harmonies that range from intimate atmospheres to passionate and intense climaxes. The octapad and drum machine enhance the project with different kind of rhythms, ethnic sounds, various patterns and enthralling grooves.

HPM was formed in 2014 and in 2016 released their first album Kosmos for the label Beta Produzioni. They have performed extensively in their home country in Rome, Perugia, Brescia, Orvieto, Assisi and many others and now for the first time are bringing their unique music to Liverpool, UK.
