Clean Break - 'Hope' Screening and Workshop

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Clean Break will be hosting a workshop and a screening of its film Hope.
Hope is an uplifting story of personal growth and community activism, exploring what hope means for women facing adversity. Through personal stories, reflection, poetry and movement, Natasha, Carina, Michelle and Nicole navigate how we can hold on to hope in times of uncertainty, and what to do when the world makes you feel there is none to be found.
In the workshop Facilitators, Sophie Connelly and River, will explore the film, respond creatively, and discover what hope means to us.
Clean Break was founded in 1979 by two women in prison who believed in the power of theatre to change lives. Their vision is of a society where women can realise their full potential, free from criminalisation. They pursue this vision by producing ground-breaking theatre in the community, in prison and on stage, which puts women’s voices at its heart and creates lasting change by challenging injustice in and beyond the criminal justice system.
Through theatre workshops and projects in prisons, the community, and Clean Break’s specialist centre in London, they help to build confidence, resilience, and wellbeing, transforming the lives of women who have experienced the criminal justice system or who are at risk of entering it. Clean Break’s Members Programme offers a range of workshops and performance opportunities led by brilliant women theatre artists, underpinned by comprehensive support.
Recently productions include Dixon and Daughters by Deobrah Bruce (National Theatre), Favour by Ambreen Razia (The Bush), Typical Girls by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm (Sheffield Crucible), and [BLANK] by Alice Birch (Donmar Warehouse).
Sophie Connelly
Sophie is the Participation Manager at Clean Break. She leads Clean Break's Members Programme and its work in Women's Centers across London. Prior to this, she has worked as a facilitator for over a decade in VAWG, DV, SYV, Gangs and Countylines, with a particular specialism in working with young people in PRU/AP and YOS settings. She has also worked extensively in the world of Arts and Disabilities. Sophie studied at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London where she trained in Drama, Applied Theatre and Education.
River
River is a director, facilitator and Clean Break Member artist. They are currently leading Creative Space on Clean Break’s Member Programme. River was on Clean Break’s Young Artist Development Programme in 2019 where they co-created and wrote Belong which was on at the Arcola Theatre and Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. Recent associate/assistant directing credits include: Resistance Theatre (Cardboard Citizens, Audio Drama), Hope (Clean Break, Film).
They regularly work as a facilitator for Clean Break and Cardboard Citizens and was recently a facilitator on Clean Break’s tour of Catch.
